USBN soldiers discussing during combat.

"- shit captain, i know you said these guys were well-trained and motivated, but you never said us they could WIELD .50 CAL MACHINEGUNS!

the PHMG-50 ( Portable Heavy Machine Gun, .50 BMG) is, as the name suggests, a .50 HMG designed to be wielded by soldiers. to achieve this objective, it was built around a sophisticated recoil-absorbing mechanism which will be explained now.

the weapon fires from an open bolt, and is gas-operated. it boasts a "constant recoil" mechanism akin to the one seen on the AA-12 automatic shotgun; this already helps in reducing recoil a lot.
furthermore, it features a semi-recoiling barrel assembly and a 3-chamber muzzle brake, akin tot he ones seen on Barrett rifles; however, this one is fairly bigger.
it features a recoil extension which also functions as a buffer, and a sliding handguard. as such, when the weapon fires, the reciever recoils while the stock and handguard stay relatively immobile to the shooter, thus reducing recoil a lot. however, it is true that the pistol grip recoils along with the reciever; if the operator feels uncomfortable with the shooting hand recoiling and the handguard hand staying immobile, he/she can lock the handguard, thus not allowing it to slide anymore.

these recoil-reducing systems can effectively reduce recoil to levels comparable to the recoil of a 30-06 rifle.

the handguard features a carrying handle which can be folded down for usge of sights and can also be rotated 90 degrees to the left; it must be unlocked to do so.

the sights can be flipped up or down. the weapon also features a brass deflector that deflects all spent brass downwards, allowing this gun to be ambidextrous.

the gas valve is adjustable; it can be used to regulate the rate of fire or to do other things as well.

it features the following markings:

I: normal. normal operation of the weapon, rate of fire: 200 RpM.
F: full. used only when the weapon is really dirty as if it is clean, the 400 RpM rate of fire may make recoil even more uncomfortable.
X: locked. no gas enters the gas tube; the weapon becomes a straight-pull, open-bolt bolt-action weapon.

the fire selector features the following markings:
S: safety.
F: Fire, semi-automatic.
A: fire, full automatic.

the weapon was designed to be light; though it increases recoil, this is greatly compensated by the recoil-reducing machanisms. the weapon, being constructed mostly with light materials such as polymer and aluminum, weighs around only 8.5 kilos unloaded. it is an impressively low weight for an HMG, but the ammunition alone weighs a lot; 100 .50 BMG rounds can weigh more than 11.5 kilos. as such, the teams who use it spare the ammunition among all soldiers while only one carries the HMG.

this weapon is used solely by a few highly specialized units whose only job is to cause chaos and havoc in enemy ranks; they are also used for mid-to-close-range slaughter and bunker raiding. the PHMG-50B, a version with a bipod, was specially designed for mid-range accuracte punishment and killing targets behind walls.

this weapon was developed and used during the Second Liberation War (history of my fictional country: fav.me/d6jhy1q ). the USBN troops used them to attack fortified Serra Negran positions and bunkers, as well as many other combat roles. it was proven to be a very effective weapon, and caused lots of chaos and havoc in enemy ranks; it was capable of wiping out and annihilating an entire enemy platoon within less than a minute. these frightening capabilities and the thinderous sound made by it when firing earned it the nickname "Sledgehammer".

Well, that beats any MG I can make that is a 1-man gun.

"Looks like we need to reverse-engineer this gun, boys"
